Virginia
Hanover County is strategically located in Central Virginia and is perfectly situated at the mid-point of the East Coast. It is bisected by Interstate 95, just north of its intersection with Interstate 64 in the metropolitan Richmond region. Interstate 295 borders the County on the south. It is a 90-minute drive from the nation’s capital, Washington D.C., and 15 minutes from the Commonwealth’s capital, Richmond.
As the result of its proximity to major population centers along the East Coast, Hanover businesses have access to an enviable transportation infrastructure that includes major interstates, rail and port facilities, commercial and municipal airports, foreign trade zones, and overnight delivery hubs. Hanover County is within 500 miles of nearly 60% of the nation’s population, over half of its manufacturing activity and 60 percent of its major corporate headquarters.
Hanover is the smallest U.S. county (by population) to have a AAA bond rating from all three ratings agencies. There are only 34 “Triple AAA” counties (out of 3,034) in the U.S. This reflects well not only on its finances, but also on the general economic outlook for the county. Hanover leads the region with the lowest government cost per capita ($85.63). Hanover continues to have the lowest real estate tax rate ($0.81) in the region. There is no business license tax (except for contractors), a distinct advantage for Hanover businesses.
Residents here get the best of both worlds. Hanover prides itself on maintaining its rural roots and offering residents a laid-back lifestyle, while its close proximity to Downtown Richmond provides convenient access urban amenities such as upscale shops, fine dining, museums, galleries and other attractions. Hanover has been recognized by Forbes, Bloomberg BusinessWeek, Money magazine and the American City Business Journals for its superior quality of life. Compared to other school districts in Virginia, the County has the lowest dropout rate (2.2%) and the highest graduation rate (96.2%). Hanover County is home to a thriving agricultural industry and a rural conversation program.
